Rational Design of a Photosystem I Photoanode for the Fabrication of Biophotovoltaic Devices

Photosystem I (PSI), a robust and abundant biomolecule capable of delivering high-energy photoelectrons, has great potential for the fabrication light-driven semi-artificial bioelectrodes. Although possibilities have been explored in this regard, true capabilities technology not achieved yet, particularly their use as bioanodes. Here, PSI Langmuir monolayers electrical wiring with specifically designed redox polymers is shown, ensuring an efficient mediated electron transfer basis advanced biophotoanode. The bioelectrode rationally implemented optimized enabling generation substantial photocurrents up to 17.6 µA cm?2 even at potentials low ?300 mV vs standard hydrogen electrode, surpassing performance comparable devices. To highlight applicability developed bioanode, biophotovoltaic cell assembled combination gas-breathing biocathode. assembly operates single compartment delivers considerable power outputs large voltages. biophotoanode constitutes important step toward development
